Chef Valerie Erwin is serving a Mardi Gras menu at EAT Cafe on Sunday February 24th.  Come and taste EAT's take on a traditional New Orleans menu. Everyone will be seated, family style at 6:30. Space is very limited, make reservations here.  

Menu Highlights: (subject to availability)

  

Dinner is $48 plus tax, due the day of the dinner.

  Grillades & grits: Braised Creole beef on stoneground grits
  BBQ Shrimp: Jumbo shrimp sauteed in spicy butter. Baguette toasts
  Gumbo: Rich NOLA style stew with duck confit and duck sausage. Anson Mills rice
  Bibb lettuce and Belgian endive salad. Blood oranges

Dessert:

Calas Banana Foster: Sweet rice beignet topped with vanilla ice cream and bananas flambeed in rum.

 

EAT Cafe is a not for profit restaurant located in West Philadelphia. Events such as the Mardi Gras dinner, help EAT Cafe support its mission of serving pay-what-you-can dinner on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

CHINESE NEW YEAR 2019: Dumpling Making Party on 2/3/19

2019 is the year of the Pig! Help EAT Café celebrate Chinese New Year by joining us for a fun, hands on lesson in making Chinese Pork Dumplings. You do not need any special equipment and the lesson includes a light meal.

The wait is almost over! EAT Cafe will officially open for business on Wednesday, October 26th! We hope you'll join us for our Grand Opening. We are having a Press Conference and Ribbon Cutting at 11:00am (followed by a light reception), and dinner service will begin at 4:30pm. EAT Cafe will operate Wednesdays through Sundays from 4:30pm-8:00pm. We can't wait to welcome Everyone At the Table :)

Jennifer Huxta's captivating photographs and vivid illustrations are now on display at the EAT Café. She has completed humanitarian photography assignments for NGOs and foundations throughout East/West/Central Africa, focusing on women’s health, climate change, and youth unemployment. Her editorial work has appeared in the New York Times, Le Monde, News Deeply, the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, The Times, Le Journal du Dimanche, The Guardian, and the BBC.

Meet the artist Friday, February 15th, 4:30pm - 5:30pm.

If you can't make the special opening event, come dine at the cafe during our normal business hours to view this beautiful artwork.

Check out photos from our Second Annual Youth Forum on September 15! It was a fun, informative afternoon of community building and social justice. Ten youth photographers, ages 10-16, shared their engaging work and their insights on how to address issues in their communities. Capped off by a compelling youth panel and delicious food by the EAT Café, it was an amazing event!

The Youth members of Witnesses to Hunger are building a movement by speaking out about their experiences with health, community, education, and empowerment. Don't miss this compelling photo exhibition, on display at the EAT Café through October.

In "Cooking dinner for tonight and tomorrow night," Joy Manning profiled the release of Julia Turshen's cookbook,  Now and Again, and the special dinner on September 11 at EAT Café, featuring Turshen as guest chef along with recipes from her book.

Turshen's book is based on creating beautiful home-cooked meals that reduce waste by repurposing or reinterpreting leftovers and other forms of creative food reuse.

EAT Café featured Julia Turshen as a guest chef on Tuesday, September 11th at 6:30pm, who prepared a lavish four-course meal. 

Nibbles:  Roasted soy sauce nuts

First course:  Shrimp and kimchi pancakes. Kimchi tartar sauce

Main course:

Lamb and zucchini meatballs with tahini sauce
Charred broccoli with capers and lemon
Baked Saffron rice
Whole wheat flatbread

Intermezzo:  Frozen watermelon agua fresca

Dessert:  Yogurt cheesecake with plum preserves

Community Event

Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service 2019

The EAT Café is seeking volunteers for our first annual Martin Luther King National Day of Service project. Our cozy non-profit restaurant needs a little sprucing up and we could really use your help with minor repairs, cleaning, and organization. Additional volunteers will be needed for food preparation because the EAT Café will donate boxed lunches to a neighboring organization that is hosting volunteers.

There are two seperate volunteer shifts (9:00am - 1:00pm) and (1:00pm - 5:00pm) available for your convenience in the following areas:

Clean-up Crew

Cleaning the walk-in refrigeration unit

Organizing basement 2nd floor inventory

Minor paint touch ups & repairs

Food Prep Making sandwiches

Boxing up lunches
